Brno - The Artistic Heart of Moravian Wine Country

Brno is an energetic and friendly university city of about 400k people. Situated just about 2 hours from Prague and 2 hours from Vienna, it's easily accessed by train, bus or car. Get to know the quaint historic center and be sure to explore the surrounding neighborhoods.

Below are some of the best places to eat, drink, explore and stay in Brno, Czech Republic

Where To Eat in Brno

Brno has delicious and affordable food, including traditional Czech and international cuisine.  I highly recommend 4pokoje for innovative spins on Czech breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The food and staff are incredible!  For burgers, local beer and great music, head to Burger INN or the unassuming pub U Sajmona pod Hajkem in the university area, just north of the old center city.

For coffee and all-day eating, check out SKOG Urban HubBavard Cafe, or Kafec, all in the center.  For quick food to go, grab something at Mikrofarma or Sklizeno Zelný trh, both of which have healthy and indulgent options.

Where To Drink in Brno

Brno has a few cozy wine bars to introduce you to all of their hard-to-pronounce native grapes.  Hang out with locals at either friendly location of justWINE, or visit Petit Cru

For an upscale vibe head to Garage Wine where you can drink top Czech and international wines.  To relax and taste local craft beers or cocktails, stop by Cafe Trojka and take in the historic and artsy atmosphere.

For beer and pub food with a side of people watching, walk to centrally located Vycep Na Stojoka.  Want to taste unique craft beers like IPAs? Have a flight at JBM Brew Lab.  Last but not least, you must experience the amazing service and super interesting cocktail menu at Bar, který neexistuje. Unsurprisingly, they also own 4pokoje mentioned above.  These guys truly define hospitality!

What To Explore in Brno

For a small city, Brno has a lot to offer.  From the obligatory Spilberk Castle Tour and Brno City Museum, to the many theaters and galleries, there is something for everyone.

Visit one of the many beautiful churches, like the Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul.  Check out the Governor’s Palace Gallery or Art House to see just a few of the diverse art exhibits.

For history buffs, take a tour of the Moravian Museum and the Underground Labyrinth  to learn about Brno’s historic tunnels, aka food and wine storage! Of course, no Brno experience is complete without a trip to the nearby Moravian wine region.

Where To Stay in Brno

The compact city center has a few historic hotel options, but Airbnb or Booking.com apartments can give you a more authentic feel of the city at a better price.  Stay just outside the center and admire the architecture, lovely parks, and local cafes that adorn the street corners.

For 1 or 2 people,  I can’t recommend Tereza’s Airbnb highly enough.  Tereza’s location is just north of the center, near Park Luzanky. In addition, this lovely Brno loft apartment in the hip Veveri area is another great option.

As mentioned earlier, you can take the train (best option) or bus to Brno from Prague, as well as from Bratislava and Vienna.  Flying into Prague will likely be your cheapest bet, but please see my travel apps page for more help.
